it is likely that your cable modem and Router are trying to occupy the same IP address....this is quite common of late.

Ensure that the ethernet (the wider cable,) is connected from the Modem to the Router's WAN port (sometimes labeled 'internet'.)

log into the Router 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 goto the LAN section, and change the router's IP address to something like 192.168.2.1 .

once you 'apply' or 'save' the new settings, on BOTH PC's you will have to 'repair' your network connection (if you are 'obtaining your IP address automatically'.) If you have entered your network IP info manually, then you will need to pick an IP address on the new network outside the DHCP range...usually 100 - 150. eg. 192.168.2.99 or 192.168.2.151 subnet 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.2.1 dns 192.168.2.1.

next you will have to run the Network setup wizard. Choose a name for your workgroup. At the end of the wizard, choose 'just finnish this wizard'.

run the wizard on BOTH pc's.
Re-boot TWICE.

If you are using Windows Firewall, ensure that the 'exception' for 'printer and file shareing' is checked on the 'exceptions' tab.
